repurposing hong kong's craftsmanship
the quality of making things
In cooperation with Poly U Design Institute for Social Innovation, the quality of things project explored preferable futures of Hong Kong's local crafts.
project phases:
1. field research
The project started by exploring Hong Kong's local street crafts Being fascinated by the ubiquitous bamboo scaffolds in the city, me and my teammate Joeri Simonian decided to further research this ancient craft.
2. sociographic enquiry
We learned that the ancient profession is undergoing severe difficulties and thus threatened to disappear completely.
3. concept sketch
Thinking of ways to detach the craft from its sole construction purpose, we proposed the transition of Hong Kong's rigid plastic playgrounds into dynamic bamboo adventures. Here the ancient technique could be used to reconnect Hong Kong's children with both their cultural and natural heritage.
